Judge Batteries has been in the battery trade since 1972. Not roadside assistance that also does batteries. Batteries, specifically, for over half a century.
A car battery gives out at the worst possible moment, and it always has. What has changed is what people can do about it. For most of our history, a dead battery meant a tow, a shop, and losing a day. The reason we work out of a van now is that none of that was ever the useful part. The useful part was always someone turning up with the right battery and the tools to fit it.
We started in the battery trade in 1972 and never diversified out of it. That single decision explains most of what we do differently. A shop that fits batteries between oil changes and brake jobs will always treat the battery as the small job. For us it has never been the small job. It is the job.
Fit enough batteries over enough years and patterns emerge that no spec sheet tells you. Short trips in dense towns. Cars that sit for weeks. A parasitic drain nobody has traced. A charging system that quietly stopped keeping up months ago. Knowing the difference is why we test the charging system before we sell anything.
The van carries the batteries and the tools, so the fix happens on the first visit instead of the second. We cover New Jersey and New York City, around the clock, and we get called out at three in the morning often enough that it stopped being remarkable. Service starts at $150, and we confirm the exact figure before we set off.
Across two states, in driveways, commuter lots, parking garages, office car parks and on the shoulder in the rain. Every one of them was somebody's bad morning, and the whole point of the business is to make it a short one.
We test before we sell. If a jump start is all you need, that is what you get and that is what you pay for.

A tow truck solves a dead battery by moving the car. That is a long, expensive way to answer a problem that usually takes twenty minutes at the kerb. A general roadside service will jump the car and leave, which gets you moving and tells you nothing about whether it will start tomorrow. We would rather find out why it died, tell you honestly, and fit the right battery if that is what it needs.
