Battery guide

What does mobile battery replacement cost?

The service and the battery are two different numbers. What drives each, and why the vehicle matters more than the mileage.

There are two components to this, and mixing them up is what makes prices look wildly inconsistent between providers. There is the service, meaning coming to you and doing the work. And there is the battery itself.

The service

Ours starts at 130 dollars for a standard call inside our coverage area. That covers travelling to the vehicle, removing the old battery, cleaning the terminals and clamps, fitting and securing the new one, testing the charging system afterwards, and taking the old battery away to be recycled. There is no core charge and no membership.

The battery

This is the part that varies enormously, and it is decided by the car rather than by us. A conventional flooded battery for a small petrol car and an AGM battery for a European vehicle with a start stop system are very different products at very different prices. Group size, terminal layout, and the cranking rating the manufacturer specifies all determine what will actually work.

That is why we ask for the year, make, and model on the phone. Once we know that, we can tell you what your vehicle takes and what it costs, and then that is the price.

What makes a battery more expensive

  • AGM construction, needed by most start stop vehicles, costs meaningfully more than flooded
  • Higher cranking ratings on larger engines and diesels
  • Awkward locations, such as under a seat or in the boot, which change the labour rather than the part
  • Registration requirements on newer vehicles, where the battery must be coded to the management system

Why the cheapest battery is often not the cheapest option

An undersized battery in a car with a heavy electrical load lives permanently under strain and fails early. Fitting a flooded battery where the manufacturer specified AGM does the same. You save on the day and pay again in eighteen months.

Compared with a garage

The part costs what the part costs wherever you buy it. What mobile service removes is the tow, the drop off, the day without a car, and the collection. For a battery, which is a job measured in minutes, that overhead was always the expensive bit.

How to get a straight number

Call with the year, make, and model, the ZIP code, and a description of where the car is parked. You get the total before anyone is dispatched, and we take cash or Zelle when the work is done.

Need this dealt with rather than read about?

We come to the car, test the battery and the charging system, and fit a replacement on the spot if you need one. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week across New York City and New Jersey.
